Radioactive Forum 2009
The 2nd annual Radioactive: Multicultural Youth Broadcasters’ Forum was held on the the 4th and 5th of April in Perth.
The aim of the Radioactive forum was to provide an opportunity for young ethnic and multicultural broadcasters and potential broadcasters to meet and discuss issues around youth participation in ethnic and multicultural community broadcasting. I think it definitely has been achieved.
Since the inaugural forum in 2007, it continues to be a great mechanism to bring together representatives from youth-serving organisations and community radio stations, to increase the awareness and opportunities that multicultural community broadcasting can offer young people of diverse cultural backgrounds, as well as illustrating the link between community broadcasting and community development.

There were plenty of opportunities for multicultural youth broadcasters to build networks with fellow broadcasters, improve their skills and develop plans to better address the needs of youth.
We've managed to cover a number of areas relating to broadcasting, including digital technology, training information, skills-based workshops, presentations from industry professionals, community development, intergeneration communication and the opportunity to provide recommendations for improved youth policy.
Overall, it was great to catch up with the other multicultural youth broadcasters around Australia, particularly the state and territory youth reps of NEMBC. The keynote speakers were great, which included great personalities such as journalist Saeed Saeed, the young Dominique Pratt, comedien Mujahid Ahmed and SBS radio producer Peggy Giakoumelos, just to name a few.
I also enjoyed meeting many new faces and seeing the beautiful city of Perth for the first time as well.
I am sure the event will grow to be even bigger and better in the near future.
